Tech-ing Wisely in K-2 Classrooms

Early childhood has distinctive learning and developmental characteristics and this article discusses how using technology effectively in K-2 classrooms with activities and software programs can be successful with these two aspects. In addition, it gives suggestions for educational and engaging computer use in the primary grades. Furthermore, the article gives states the importance of supervision and location of computers. It includes half a dozen classroom-tested activities and recommended software programs. It states that technology also can play a role in the preparation for future learning with early childhood learning being the foundation for how students learn for years to come. K-2 students can and should use technology to build information literacy and technology skills for the years ahead. Computer use has value no matter what the specific application might be. "Computers in the early grades allow kids to extend their learning in exciting ways. Whether it is a site that allows for drill and practice or a rich extension of what is going on in the classroom, it is a motivating tool that enhances learning."

"To game or not to game" was a topic in the article. This is a hot topic with me. I think games and drill and practice can be beneficial if they are used to enhance the current skills being taught or to keep practicing skills. I think that too many teachers think this IS technology integration. It can be a piece but not the whole puzzle.
